Generally, people associate reflexology with feet but hand reflexology has its advantage.
Like most of my fellows’ reflexology therapists, I prefer to work on the feet. As you know, our feet are often protected with shoes and socks so more sensitive and receptive when working on the reflex points.
However, there are situations when I have to work on the hands rather that the feet such as:
- No space or time to work on the feet,
- Some people are ticklish or sensitive,
- Others do not like showing their feet,
- Infection,
- Operation on feet.
Recently, I had to do a hand reflexology for a patient because I could not have access easily to his feet. At the end of the session, I asked him for the feedback, he told that he enjoyed the treatment.
When I met him for a second treatment the week after, I managed to give him a foot reflexology. First of all, he felt asleep, secondly he told me that it was the best reflexology treatment he ever had. He admitted that he preferred much more a foot reflexology than a hand reflexology.
Obviously, everyone has a different experience with the therapy.
I had another case where I had to do a hand reflexology because the lady had an operation and she could not move too much from the lying position. It was the first time she ever had a reflexology treatment.
The first session, she felt asleep. When she woke up, she was amazed how relaxed she felt.
The second treatment, she did not fell asleep – she was rather intrigued by what I was doing maybe thinking how she managed to felt asleep so easily last week. But, she told me that she felt very relaxed.
Actually, here is a case where the lady never experienced a foot reflexology so she could not compare the two approaches. However, she still felt very relaxed after each hand reflexology.
Also, I remember, some time ago, while working on my case studies, among the ten people I have to treat during several weeks, there was one lady who was not so easy to challenge on reflexology. It was only around the 6th foot reflexology that she felt some improvement to her condition. After the 9th session, I went for a hand reflexology. To my surprise, she felt asleep; she managed to relax straight away and felt a real sense of wellbeing.
What my experience taught me was that everyone responds differently to both approaches. And hand or feet reflexology have both impact on the body.
